Ecological Requirements (Climate, rainfall/water/temperature/soils)
 
Sorghum is produced in a wide range of soil types and agro-climatic zones. It does well in heavy clay soils (vertisols) and light sandy soils with a pH ranging from 5.0-8.5. Some of the agro-climatic zones include;
Semi-Arid lowlands- These are places of altitude of 250-1500 m above sea level that receive 250-500 mm annual rainfall.
Mid-semi-arid highlands-These are places of altitude 1750-2000 m above sea level with rainfall averaging 300-800mm annually.
Humid coastal lowlands- These are areas situated 0-250 m above sea level with rainfall ranging from 400-800 mm annually. These zones have a high temperature and humidity
Moist mid-altitude- These are areas with an altitude of between 1150-1750 m and rainfall of above 500 mm . This also includes places of low humidity that have high temperatures
Cold Semi-Arid highlands- These are areas with an altitude ranging from 1750-2000m above sea level with a 300-800 mm rainfall regime. These regions have low temperatures and humidity:

Mtama huzalishwa katika aina mbalimbali za udongo na maeneo ya hali ya hewa ya kilimo. Hufanya vizuri kwenye udongo mzito wa mfinyanzi (vertisol) na mchanga mwepesi wenye pH kuanzia 5.0-8.5. Baadhi ya maeneo ya hali ya hewa ya kilimo ni pamoja na;
Nyanda tambarare zenye ukame - Hizi ni sehemu za mwinuko wa 250-1500 m juu ya usawa wa bahari na hupata mvua 250-500 mm kwa mwaka.
Nyanda za juu za kati-nusu kame-Hizi ni sehemu za mwinuko wa 1750-2000 m juu ya usawa wa bahari na wastani wa mvua 300-800mm kila mwaka.
Nyanda za chini za pwani zenye unyevunyevu- Haya ni maeneo yaliyo 0-250 m juu ya usawa wa bahari na mvua kuanzia 400-800 mm kila mwaka. Kanda hizi zina joto la juu na unyevu
Mwinuko unyevu wa kati- Haya ni maeneo yenye mwinuko wa kati ya 1150-1750 m na mvua zaidi ya 500 mm. Hii pia inajumuisha maeneo ya unyevu wa chini ambayo yana joto la juu
Nyanda za Juu zenye Baridi Nusu Kame- Haya ni maeneo yenye mwinuko wa kuanzia 1750-2000m juu ya usawa wa bahari na mfumo wa mvua wa 300-800 mm. Mikoa hii ina joto la chini na unyevu:
